Derek Ling, Founder & CEO of Tianji.com
Derek is a serial entrepreneur with strong corporate background focused primarily in the IT and Internet industries. He's held senior management positions at Motorola, Apple Computer and Sina.com, and is currently the founder and CEO of Tianji.com , the leading social networking service for professionals in China.
In 1999, Derek co-founded Qzone.com with one of the founders of Excite, Mark Wong-VanHaren. The startup was based in Beijing and within six months of launch became the largest youth entertainment community in China revolving around homepage and music. It was nearly acquired by Yahoo early 2001.
Prior to the startup, Derek served as Vice President of Sina.com. He was instrumental in engineering the merger between U.S. Sinanet and China's Stone RichSight to form Sina.com – the leading portal in China.
On the
corporate side, Derek worked at
Motorola in Silicon
Valley where he spearheaded market entry strategy and business
development in Greater China. At Apple Computer, Derek served as
the Director of Business Development for Greater China, and was responsible for
building the early iPod market in China.
In his current capacity, Derek has build Tianji.com to be the No. 1 Social Networking platform for professionals in China. The company is backed by accomplished investors, including Bill Melton (founder of Verifone -- sold to HP for US$1.4 billion; early investor and board member of AOL); Jack Hong (co-founder of Sina.com); Pehong Chen (founder and CEO of Broadvision); Nick Ricciardi (Executive Director, Goldman Sachs Asia); and Jack Gao (ex-President of Microsoft China & currently President of News Corp China).
Derek received his BA from Amherst College and MA from Stanford University. He was a PhD candidate at Stanford and had completed the "Executive Program for Growing Companies" at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
