Donate a PEACEFUL DREAM
Donate Tents/Sleeping Bags for China Earthquake Relief
Thanks for your generous donations. After several sleepless nights and soring backs, our volunteer team felt a big relief that we have delivered your love to the people in need. You can be ensured that someone are having a peaceful dream after the drama of 5/12 earth quake, thanks to your generous donations.
The following is a brief summary of the tent donation drive:
On Santa Clara site, we collected 1905 items (716 tents, 764 sleeping bags, 425 blankets/airbeds and other items). In Fremont/Hayward site, as of May 25, there were 1005 items (383 tents, 18 super large tents, 344 sleeping bags, 261 blankets and other items).
The Santa Clara site donations were all shipped by United Airlines free of charge on 5/28, 5/30 and 6/01. According to United Airline Air Waybill record, the total shipping pieces/boxes are 1028 and the total weight is17,535 lbs. They passed the expedited green path in custom and were then transported by Air China from Beijing to Sichuan.
In order to speed up the shipment, after coordination, the donations in Fremont/Hayward site, along with those donations collected by Consulate, were shipped through China East Airline cargo on 6/01 through Shanghai to Sichuan.
The donations were received by Sichuan civil affairs agency and are being distributed to the people affected by 5/12 earth quake.
After the first announcement made on May 21 Wednesday night to USTC and SVTN email lists, we received tremendous responses. With the joining of NCC512 on Thursday to collect weekend donations, the responses were overwhelming. We have to cut the donation drive short due to the overwhelming response that overloaded our donation sites and shipments, and the need to ship out donated tents as soon as possible. For those of you that wanted to contribute but missed the opportunity, we also thank you and delivered your caring message to the Chinese people affected by the earth quake.
Oh, there is one more favor we would like to ask you to do: smile to the fight attendants from United Airline, China East Airline cargo and Air China as a big thank you for their generous help J

And maybe spare some smile to the volunteers that help to make this happened too J:
The following is a summary of how you all have made this happened:
More than 30 volunteers in 14 companies helped coordinating the donations inside their companies.
USTC and SVTN volunteers rented 4 trucks to collect the SV donations and transported to the airport. Donations collected in the Fremont/Hayward site and managed by NCC512 earthquake relief org was transported by a moving company.
More than 60 volunteers spent their long weekend to check, sort and pack the donations on both Santa Clara site and Fremont/Hayward site, and transporting/loading the shipments.
Datong Chen, an SVTN alumni and co-founder of Spreadtrum Communications Inc. has donated $2,000 to cover the cost incurred in renting the 4 trucks and handling the donations. Robert Chen, an USTC alumnus from Trusty Realty, has devoted himself full time on this project for almost one week. Oulin Yang, Peter Gong and others have also kindly offered free packing and shipping for the Fremont/Hayward site donations.
